The Community Development and Leadership Initiative (CDL):
- Department of Community Development and Public Service
...An outgrowth of the CDULCE! Project -- a project seeking to meet the needs of our community in supporting efforts in Community Development,Urban Leadership, and Civic Engagement.
So you say you want a revolution... The Beatles
Currently under development at COA; we are developing programs in:
-
violence prevention
-
property management
-
learning community governance
-
public administration
-
community change agency
These projects were officially unveiled in November of 2009. CDL will offer a series of "applied politics" and social change agency certificates and degrees. We see this as a "vocational education" program in street level politics.
We intend to begin accepting students to this program by the Fall of 2010. This will be an applied certificate and/or an A.A. Degree preparing people to actually "run" social change campaigns, engage in urban and community development work, and apply various related skill sets in re-visioning "our" future.
We will offer a range of programs rooted in cutting edge skills for facilitating participatory democracy and organizing and running campaigns for social change from the level of one's local community to working on large political campaigns.
CDL is a partnership between the Peralta Colleges (housed at COA) and a consortium of Bay Area Community Change organizations to allow their clientele and the general public to become students learning skills that enable them to change their own communities. As well, we have established "pathways to success" taking a student from an A.A. degree into four-year degree programs with three Bay Area universities and one Masters Program. This set of pathways would allow students to seek professional careers in public service and community leadership.
We have a vision for an educational experience rooted in a "Green Curriculum" which....
.......is one wherein: Education incorporates principles of sustainability enabling people to become effective engaged global citizens by empowering them with the knowledge, values & skills to create a future that is socially just and economically viable while being ecologically sound and promoting a healthy quality of life and psychological well-being.
This is tied to the Sustainable Peralta Initiative...
